Islands in the Gulf

This past week Nabil stopped by for a visit and brought me my very own dishdasha. As you can see, it has a sort of gospel choir vibe. Nabil asked me to play guitar, requesting The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. Had to look it up online for the words, and still managed to do a pretty poor job. We consoled ourselves by watching a glitzy live version on Youtube, I think it was some kind of award show and Kenny was later joined by Dolly Pardon  to duet on Islands in the Stream.

Night Time

Dubai is open late, maybe not Manhattan late, but plenty of shops and restaurants are open past midnight. This time of year, the weather is much more forgiving after sunset. I'm starting to enjoy the heat in small doses, I can stand in the yard in my trunks and imagine I'm on a tropical vacation.

New Home In The Sun

Here I am on my second day in Dubai, hanging around the apartment waiting for my luggage to show up. Actually, I'm waiting for 2/5 of my luggage to show up, hopefully the balance will arrive in a day or two.

In the interest of boring you to tears, I've prepared a virtual tour of our new digs. Actually, I do have a reason for excessively documenting our new abode; it's simply because many of you won't be able to come visit... something about 24 hour travel days and 120 degree heat.

No, that's not our place you see above left. That's Mr. Jones' place next door, he hasn't moved in yet but they keep the fountain running for him none the less.

Next, a view of the neighborhood.
That's Nabil's boat, he's our property manager and all around fixer-- I haven't met him yet but he's already been a huge help to us prior to my arrival. The apartments in the background are across the street. In the spirit of homogenous expansion, they're throwing up a pair of slightly different boxes down the block. All of Dubai is writhing in a fit of aggressive development and the residential areas
are no exception. That's why we're here actually, one of us to inject some sustainability into the melee and the other to sustain the sustainer.

I took this picture after taking out the trash. Apparently our dumpster is the one in front of this job site. Not sure how that works but the construction worker I bumped into while making a deposit didn't seem to mind.
Here's a look at our apartment, as you can see, she's small but mighty. Mighty fine.

We often can't decide whether to luxuriate on the bed or the couch, it's a dilemma.

As of yet, the desk is only outfitted with a stool, so it's less of a relaxing zone and more of a hurry up and type before your ass falls asleep sort of spot.

You can see the cabinet door ajar on the right above, I did that so you could admire our ample storage. Allow me to also say that these pictures are staged, I tidied up first.

This where I sit and dictate my memoirs, note the microphone to the left.

This is the formal dining area, currently standing room only. We're going to buy some stools.

It also doubles as a place to make lunch, which is one of my top three meals. I'm toasting pita with mustard, cheese, and turkey. It's a simple snack that somehow feels more authentic than it really is.
